South Pacific was my first professional design and featured a cast of over 20 performers. With a show as recognizable as this, how can we keep the traditional feeling of this show, but add a unique twist to leave it memorable for the audience. Thus we adjusted the orchestration for dual upright pianos which were traditionally mic’d. This helped the orchestration fit in very well with some of the shows more softer and intimate numbers but challenging to achieve a fuller sound for the larger choral numbers.
